The tree is gone but the stump is still there, right where you’d like to mow or plant. Hot Springs Tree Service Co. grinds stumps in and around Hot Springs, whether the tree came down last week or years ago. It doesn’t matter who took the tree down. We’ll come out, look at the stumps and give you a price for all of them.
A stump is more than an eyesore. It gets in the way of the mower, it sprouts, and it slowly rots where it stands. Grinding it out gives you the spot back for grass or a flower bed, and it’s one less thing to mow around.
Most people who ask for stump removal want the stump ground out. Grinding takes it below the lawn without digging up the yard. If you need the whole stump and root ball dug out instead, say so when we talk.
Planning to plant a new tree or pour concrete on the same spot? Mention that too, because it changes how the stump should be handled, and it’s easier to plan for before the grinder arrives.

A stump grinder is a machine with a spinning steel wheel studded with carbide teeth. The operator sweeps the wheel side to side across the stump, shaving it down a little at a time until it’s below the lawn.
Buried utility lines have to be located and marked before any grinding. Private lines are usually not part of that marking, so point out any you know of: sprinkler lines, an invisible dog fence, low-voltage lighting, a septic line. Loose rock around the stump has to be moved first, because rock is hard on grinder teeth, and Hot Springs has plenty of it.
The stump is ground down below the surface. Surface roots can be ground as well, so point out the ones that bother you when we come out to look. If the gate is narrow or the stump is hard to reach, mention that too.
You’re left with a hole full of wood chips and soil. The chips can be used as mulch or hauled away. For grass, take out most of the chips, fill with topsoil and seed. Chips left in the hole tie up nitrogen in the soil as they break down. The filled spot sinks a little as the last chips and roots decay, so plan to add soil once or twice before the lawn is even again.
Grinding is right for almost every yard. It’s far less disruptive than digging, and once the spot is filled and seeded you can mow over it.
Full removal means digging out the stump and its whole root ball with an excavator. It leaves a large hole and is a much bigger job. It’s the right call when something is being built on that exact spot: a foundation, a driveway, a pool. If that’s what you need, say so when we talk.
Chemical stump removers and burning are the do-it-yourself options. Chemical removers work slowly and often disappoint. A burning stump can smolder underground along the roots for days, which is a real risk in a dry summer.
Roots are a related question. Roots showing in the grass can be taken down by the same machine. Roots under a driveway, a walk or a foundation stay where they are, because reaching them means breaking up whatever is on top.
Old, half-rotted stumps are no trouble. The stumps that give a grinder real difficulty are ones with rock, concrete or metal in them, such as an old fence post set beside the trunk. If you know of anything like that, tell us when we talk.
Where the stump sits matters too. One on a slope or beside a rock wall takes more setting up than one on a level lawn, so mention it.
The price of grinding a stump depends mostly on its size, so it helps to measure across the widest part at ground level, including any flared roots. The quote is free. What changes the price:
If you’re having a tree removed anyway, ask for the stump to be included in the same quote. See the tree removal page.
Below the level of the lawn, which is enough for grass. If you need a particular depth, for replanting a tree for example, say so when you ask for a quote.
The roots left in the ground die and decay over time. They won’t grow a new tree, though a few species, sweetgum especially, can send up sprouts for a while. Mowing them off takes care of it.
You can, but it takes years, and a hardwood stump takes far longer than a pine. In the meantime it’s in the way, and old stumps can attract carpenter ants.
