A good trim does three things. It gets limbs off your roof and away from your driveway, it takes out the dead wood before the wind does, and it keeps the tree in better shape. Hot Springs Tree Service Co. handles tree trimming and pruning in and around Hot Springs.
Hot Springs is a town of big trees, mostly oaks, hickories and pines. They’re a large part of why people love living here. They also need care, especially where they hang over a house.
Most trimming calls come down to a few things: a limb over the roof, branches crowding the driveway, dead wood that might fall, or a tree that has grown too thick to let any light through. Often it’s more than one of those on the same tree.
Tree pruning is also the less drastic choice. A tree that worries you doesn’t always have to come down, and a trim is often all it needs.
Not sure what your trees need? That’s the usual starting point. We’ll walk the yard with you, point out what’s worth doing now and what can wait, and give you a price.

Limbs are cut back from the roof, gutters, chimney and driveway. Clearance keeps branches from scraping shingles. If limbs are near a power line, tell us when we talk and check with your power company.
Dead and broken branches come out of the crown. Dead limbs are the ones that fall on a calm day.
After wind or ice, broken limbs leave torn stubs behind. Each one is cut back to a sound branch or to the trunk so the tree can grow over the wound, and limbs caught up in the canopy are brought down.
Selected branches are removed through the canopy to let more light and air through.
The lowest limbs are removed to open up the yard, a view of the lake, or headroom over a walkway or driveway.
A few small cuts in a tree’s early years help set its structure for life.

If it’s been years since anyone looked at the big trees near your house, it’s worth a look.
A walk around the yard helps before you call. Look up for limbs resting on other limbs, bark hanging in strips, and branches with no leaves in summer, and note which trees they are on.
A tree can’t heal a wound the way skin does. It can only grow new wood over it. That’s why where a cut is made matters so much. A cut just outside the branch collar closes over with time. A flush cut or a long stub stays open and lets decay in.
The amount matters too. Taking too much of the leaf area at once starves a tree and triggers a flush of weak sprouts. A tree that needs a lot of work is better pruned in stages.
Topping is the cut to avoid. It removes the tree’s main leaders and most of its leaves at once, and what grows back is weakly attached.
Pruning has limits. It cannot fix decay in the trunk, and it will not keep an oversized tree small for long. When that is the situation, it is better to hear it than to pay for trimming that only delays the question.
Trimming prices cover a wide range. A small ornamental is a small job. A tall oak over a roof that needs a climber and rigging is a much bigger one. The price depends on height, how much is coming off, what’s under the tree, and whether a truck can get close.
If you have several trees, mention them all so they can be quoted together. If a tree turns out to be too far gone to trim, we’ll tell you, and you can ask about removal instead.
It depends on the tree. Vigorous growers near a roof or driveway need attention more often than a slow-growing shade tree out in the open. Young trees benefit from light shaping early on. Having the big trees near the house looked at every few years is a reasonable habit.
For most trees, winter, while they’re dormant and the branch structure is easy to see. Dead, broken or hanging limbs can be removed at any time of year.
No. Topping removes the tree’s main leaders and most of its leaves at once, and the tree answers with a thicket of weak shoots. If a tree is too tall for where it stands, the choices are a careful crown reduction or removal.
